Everyone is determined to improve their life in some way:
Maybe they want a new car
Maybe they want overcome homelessness
Maybe they want to step into a leadership role
The desires can lead to action but the transition the transition from reality to another isn’t managed holistically. The underlying reason for this is self-sabotage.
Self-sabotage takes many forms. The most common one is when a person makes an objective but without viable actions to work towards it.
For example, someone claims, “I want to make 1 million dollars!”. Then that person makes the claim to everyone around them, but this desire doesn’t have any actionable steps.
How is that person going to make 1 million dollars? Through aggressive investments? Through inheritance? Through their bi-monthly salary? What timeframe do they make it in? Who keeps them motivated? Because the objective wasn’t broken down into achievable steps and allies weren’t identified, the person self-sabotaged themselves.
To intervene with self-sabotage, the person could consider co-creating their ‘how’ with a coach. Let’s look at the ways a coach and client can co-create:
A coach creates development plans based on a client’s goals, contexts, habits, and breakthroughs
A coach keeps momentum as a client works towards their goal
A coach holds a client accountable when clients don’t achieve their chosen, timeboxed goals
·A coach cultivates a safer space to break to the client’s deep-seated, negative perceptions of themselves
If this person took their goal of making 1 million dollars to a coach, a goal setting session can take place. The coach would ask the best questions to break down the objective into many achievable ones.
In 2021, Forbes published “How This 27-Year-Old Made $1 Million Last Year”, an article that looks at Michelle Schroeder-Gardner’s success. She outlines her success in an interview format, including living habits.
Imagine if you were the one interviewed by Forbes. How would you answer?
